  • Four deadly earthquakes hit Afghanistan in the span of a week in October, two of which were 6.3-magnitude quakes. One hit Herat province on Oct. 15, killing over 2,000 people. A few days later, on Oct. 18, another rocked western Afghanistan, leaving another 2,000 dead.

  • The U.N. confirmed that 90% of the victims of the first earthquake were women and children. More than 3,000 homes were completely destroyed, leaving over 40,000 people displaced.

  • Medical facilities in the country are under-resourced, leading hospitals to struggle to care for the victims of the earthquake. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged the international community to "come together and support Afghans impacted by the earthquake — many of whom were already in need before this crisis."

  • Islamic Relief's Herat-based team is on the ground responding to the earthquake and ongoing humanitarian needs in the nation. The organization provides primary health assistance, medicine, and counseling, along with distributing tents, food, and cash vouchers to those most affected.
