• Maui experienced severe wildfires in August, prompting evacuations, killing around 100, destroying homes and businesses, and even causing some to run into the water to escape the flames. 

• The fire almost completely decimated the historic town of Lahaina, which is home to 13,000 and a popular tourist destination. The town is still in recovery.
